《穿普拉达的女王》英语观后感
A Comment on the Film the Devil Wears Prada
This movie shows us a story about Andrea Sachs which is an aspiring journalist from Northwestern University. She gets a job as a co-assistant to the icy editor-in-chief of Runway fashion magazine Miranda Priestly. Despite no real knowledge of fashion, she wins Miranda’s approval finally in her efforts. However she realizes that she pursues her dream in the opposite direction and she loses her boyfriend and college friends. Thus she leaves Miranda, Runway, and fashion behind.
I’m deeply impressed by many plots of this movie. Many people may hate and blame the powerful editor Miranda. She is quite hard on Andrea and sacrifices Nigel to keep her own job. Feared by her staff and many in the fashion world, she seems to live without love. Nevertheless, she cares a lot about her twin daughters. Once she said to Andrea, that blue represents millions of dollars and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. Miranda’s comment makes everybody feel great respect for her. While others regard the fashion as a tool of earning money, Miranda respects for fashion as Chinese ancient swordsman treat his sword. Her success is the achievement of career at the expense of personal and family goals. Due to her commitment in business, we admire and appreciate her outstanding achievement. As her husband, he should be tolerant of these hardships with a spirit of sacrifice. Therefore it is normal for their leaving. Miranda accepts and never complaints.
As a junior personal assistant to Miranda, Andy puts up with the eccentric and humiliating requests of her boss because, she is told, if she lasts a year in the position she will get her pick of other jobs, perhaps even the journalistic position she truly craves. At first, Andy fumbles with her job and fits in poorly with her coworker Emily. As she spends increasing amounts of time at Miranda’s beck and call, problems arise in her relationships with her college friends and her boyfriend Nate. One day, Andy saves Miranda from being embarrassed by Emily at a charity benefit, and Miranda rewards her by offering to take her to the fall fashion shows in Paris instead of Emily. Andy hesitates to take this privilege away from Emily, but she is forced to accept the offer after being told by Miranda that she will lose her job if she declines. Pleased by her display of loyalty, she tells Andy she seems some of herself in her. Andy repulsed, said she could never do to anyone what Miranda did to Nigel. Miranda replies that she already did, stepping over Emily when she agreed to go to Paris. When they stop, Andy gets out and throws her cell phone into the foundation of the Place de la Concorde. Andy realizes she must make a choice between them and her job lest she become more like the woman she despises working for.
Many people say that Andy is a Cinderella and has her own dream. For my part, although she turns back to her plain looking, it can not explain Miranda’s fault or bad fashion. I quite approve of her viewpoint when she enters the company. We can’t change ourselves because of one job. Nowadays many young people lose themselves in this world of temptation. They lose sight of their dreams and come to terms with the real world. Andy changes and learns her responsibilities and begins to dress more stylishly. Her boyfriend is angered by her refusal to admit she’s become what she once ridiculed, and they break up. Most people work to live, not live to work. We should consider working as part of our lives. If we get a job at the cost of our love, friendship and kinship, we are putting the cart before the horse. No doubt working will bring many benefits to our life, but it can’t replace our families. We can lose our jobs one day, but we can never leave our parents.
Andy’s story is not a tragedy caused by her boss but a race between two dreams. In the last scene, Andy, dressed casually but with a bit more style, sees Miranda getting into her car across the street. They exchange looks and Miranda gives a soft smile once inside the car. Two heroines do not compromise and they continue to pursue their respective dreams without hesitation. They appreciate each other and leave precious memories. All in all, we must have done something right, more right than other jumpers before. I believe that hold fast to my dream, and then I can reach the sky!
